WELL, NOW I HAVE REALLY GONE AND DONE IT, MY DREAM HAS ALWAYS BEEN TO HAVE A MINI-LIMO, AND I HAVE SEEN PICTURES OF THEM AND WHENEVER THE SUBJECT OF *A MINI-LIMO* CAME UP, LOW AND BEHOLD, UP POPPED THIS CAR... SO I HAVE HAD MY EYE ON IT FOR A LONG TIME, AND RIGHT AROUND THE BEGINNING OF DECEMBER 2002, I RECEIVED A CALL FROM MY FRIEND HARRY BULLENS, IN THE U.K. ON HIS CELL PHONE, HE WAS ON HIS WAY BACK FROM A BIG CAR SHOW JUST OUTSIDE OF BIRMINGHAM, HE WAS SO EXCITED HE COULD BARELY CONTAIN HIMSELF, AND THEN HE TOLD ME THAT THERE WAS THE LIMO, LOOKING GORGEOUS,,,*AND* WITH A *FOR SALE* SIGN ON THE WINDOW,,,,, AND THE REST IS HISTORY, I CALLED THE OWNER LINDSAY TAYLOR-HAYNES, AND WE STRUCK UP A FAMOUS FRIENDSHIP FROM THE GET-GO, AND THE DEAL WAS SEALED WITHIN HOURS... AND BEST OF ALL, I THINK I HAVE MADE A LIFE LONG FRIEND AS WELL. LINDSAY & SHARON ARE WONDERFUL PEOPLE, WHO PUT SEVERAL YEARS OF LOVE AND PASSION INTO THIS PROJECT, AND I AM SO LOOKING FORWARD TOWARDS OUR TRIP ACCROSS TO THE U.K. TO MEET THEM AND THEIR LITTLE BOY.
** HOW THE LIMO DREAM STARTED **
THIS CAR HAS A VERY SPECIAL BACKGROUND, AS LINDSAY TELLS IT, HE WAS AT THE LOCAL PUB AFTER WORK, BACK IN 1993 AND DISCUSSING IMPORTANT ISSUES LIKE HOW TO SAVE THE WORLD & SUCH, AND THEN LINDSAY & HIS FRIENDS STARTED TALKING ABOUT A NEW PROJECT, MIND YOU STRETCHING OF CARS IS SOMETHING THESE GUYS HAD BEEN DOING FOR A LIVING SO IT WAS NOT A SEAT OF THE PANTS TYPE PROJECT THAT WAS GETTING STARTED HERE. AND AS THE IDEA OF MAKING A STRETCH MINI LIMO HAD BEEN ATTEMPTED IN THE PAST BY SEVERAL OTHERS, AND THEY HAD FAILED MISSERABLY, LINDSAY THOUGHT THERE MUST BE A WAY, HE CONSULTED WITH HIS FATHER, A STRUCTURAL ENGINEER BY TRADE & HE CAREFULLY STUDIED THE WHOLE IDEA, AND FIGURED ALL THE STRESS FACTORS, AND SO SLOWLY THE PROJECT STARTED TO TAKE SHAPE.. SO THAT IS HOW THE CONCEPT ALL STARTED. SO OVER THE NEXT 18 MONTHS NOT ONLY DID LINDSAY SPEND SOME 4,000 LOVING HOURS ASSEMBLING IT & WHO KNOWS HOW MANY MORE PLANNING IT ALL OUT ?? TENTHS OF THOUSANDS OF POUNDS, AND DONATIONS OF VARIOUS PARTS. THE ENTIRE BODY IS STRUCTURALLY ENGINEERED, AND THE FRAME IS A SPACE FRAME, NOT JUST A BUNCH OF STEEL AND A FEW MINI'S WELDED TOGETHER,,,NOT AT ALL. THIS ONE WAS CAREFULLY RESEARCHED AND ALL ASPECTS OF STRESS, TWIST, AND BODY ROLL AND SUCH WAS TAKEN INTO ACCOUNT.
NO WONDER IT IS RECOGNIZED AS THE VERY BEST MINI-LIMO EVER BUILT...AND WITHOUT A DOUBT THE MOST EXPENSIVE & LUXURIOUS AT THAT. I HAVE HAD A FEW EMAIL'S WITH PICTURES OF OTHER LIMO'S THAT HAVE BEEN MADE, FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD, AND I HAVE YET TO SEE ONE MADE WITH THE LEVEL OF CONSTRUCTION THAT LINDSAY USED ON THIS CAR, HIS FORE-THOUGHT TO STRUCTURAL ENGINEEERING, AND INCORPORATING AN INNER ROLLCAGE STRUCTURE, IS UNLIKE ANY OF THE OTHERS I HAVE SEEN. BUT THERE ARE SOME GORGEOUS ONES OUT THERE.
IT ALL STARTED AS A 1969 MINI COOPER, AND LINDAY ROUNDED UP 2 MORE DONOR CARS, AND HAD TO USE VARIOUS PARTS SUCH AS THE ADDITUIONAL ROOF PANELS, AND THE ADDITIONAL FLOOR PARTS, AND HE DOCUMENTED THE STRETCHING IN A SERIES OF GREAT PICTURES, THAT I AM INTENDING ON POSTING UP EVENTUALLY ON A SEPARATE PAGE, AS IT MIGHT BE HELPFUL IF SOMEONE ELSE MIGHT WANT TO TACKLE THE JOB OF A *LIMO* OF THEIR OWN.

SURPRISINGLY ENOUGH EACH ARM-REST COOLER HOLDS 8-9 COKE CANS OR BEER CANS, WATER BOTTLES I DO NOT KNOW OR WHAT EVER ELSE YOU WOULD WANT TO PUT IN THERE. AND THEN I WILL USE THE FREEZER, GEL PACK'S, TO KEEP EVERYTHING VERY COLD, RATHER THAN ICE, AS TO PREVENT ANY MOULD OR MUSTY SMELLS, ETC. SO NOW THIS BABY IS REALLY READY FOR THE ROAD...HE HE HE...

NOTE THE RATHER INTERESTING AIR INTAKE SYSTEM THAT LINDSAY ENGINERED, IT IS ACTUALLY THE GAS FILLER HOSE-NECK FROM A SAAB, AND THE INTAKE BOX FROM A MINI TURBO, USING A K&N FREE-FLOW FILTER. *VERY INTERESTING INDEED* BUT IT WORKS VERY WELL.. AND AS LINSAY SAID, HE WANTED TO KEEP THE SUCTION PLENNUM AS FAR FORWARD AND AWAY FROM THE DRIVER AS POSSIBLE, AS TO KEEP THE INTERIOR NOICE LEVEL DOWN, AS THOSE 1430cc *MONSTER* MOTORS DO HAVE QUITE A THROATY ROAR TO THEM..( I DONT WANT TO SAY THAT THEY THEY REALLY SUCK, BUT THEY DO,,,HE HE HE !!)AND IT REALLY DOES DO THE JOB.

I DID END UP HAVING TO CHANGE THE RADIATOR, THE ONE THAT WAS IN THE CAR WAS A 4 CORE, AND FOR THE HOT CALIFORNIA CLIMATE, 2 TRIPS OUT, IT OVERHEATED IN JUST 65 DEGREE WEATHER, AND THE COOLING FAN WAS GOOING FULL SPEED. SO IT NOW HAS A FREE FLOW WIDE 2 CORE HOT CLIMATE RADIATOR, MADE FOR OUR *CRAZY* CLIMATE HERE, AND THE COOLING FAN HAD TO ME MADE MANUAL (SADLY ENOUGH), I ALSO ADDED SOME OTHER GOODIES, REPLACING THE MASTER CLUTCH CYLINDER, THE MASTER BRAKE, AND THE BOOSTER AS WELL, AND THE SYSTEM WAS FULLY WASHED OUT AND EVERYTHING RUNS ON DOT 5 SILICON RACING FLUID, I LIKE THAT A BIT BETTER, AS IT DOES NOT ATTRACT WATER, AND IS GREAT FOR CARS THAT ARE NOT DRIVEN VERY MUCH, AND SADLY ENOUGH I DO NOT GET TO DRIVE MINE ON A REGULAR BASIS, SO THIS DOES SOLVE THAT PROBLEM.
** SOME SUSPENSION UPGRADES **
PROJECT FRONT ADJUSTABLE TIE-RODS, I JUST LIKE THESE AND HAVE THEM ON ALL THE CARS, AND ADD THE POLY BUSHINGS AS WELL, TO GET JUST A LITTLE BIT MORE STIFFNESS.

AND AS LINDSAY AND I HAD DISCUSSED, THAT THE CAR HAD BEEN WELL ENGINEERED FOR THE ADDITIONAL WEIGHT, BUT THAT NORMAL WEAR AND TEAR ITEMS, SUCH AS SHOCKS, BUSHINGS AND ETC, WOULD PROBABLY TAKE A HEAVIER TOLL, DUE TO THE ADDED FORCES OF THAT WEIGHT. AND SO I DID, I DIS-ASSEMBLED THE LOWER A-ARM ASSEMLY, AND PULLED OUT THE PIN, TO FIND THE FOLLOWING AS YOU CAN SEE IN THE PICTURES BELOW, THE BUSHINGS WERE TOTALLY DESTROYED, AND ON ONE SIDE THE STEEL SLEEVES HAD ACTUALLY FROZEN TO THE A-ARM PIN, AND THE HEAT HAD STARTED DIS-COLORING THE PIN. SO I REPLACED BOTH PINS, AND USED THE HARDER AND HEAVY DUTY POLY BUSHINGS, AGAIN THINKING IN THE LINES OF THE HEAVIER LOADS ON THE CAR.

WELL, HERE IS THE RIDE REPORT, I AM NOTHING BUT IMPRESSED, THOSE YELLOW POLY BUSHINGS TRULY DID THE TRICK, AND I THINK THAT THEY WILL HANDLE THAT ADDITIONAL WEIGHT A BIT BETTER AS WELL. WHAT A RIDE, JUST FANTASTIC. AND I UNDERSTAND THAT THEY ARE SUPPOSED TO LAST QUITE A BIT LONGER AS WELL & THAT SOUNDS GOOD TO ME.
SO OF COURSE WE CAN NOT STOP THERE HE HE HE!!! I DECIDED TO CHECK OUT THE FRONT SHOCKS AS WELL, AS I NOTICED SOME OBVIOUS CORROSION ON THE BASE OF EACH ONE. SO AFTER REMOVING THE TOP BOLT I ATEMPTED THE BOTTOM ONE, THE NUT CAME OF FINE, THE SHOCK CAME OFF, THE RUBBER-BUSHING AS WELL, BUT THE STEEL SLEEVE WAS ONCE AGAIN SEIZED ON TO THE BOLT, I HAD TO LITERALLY CUT IT OFF WITH A MACHITA. AND THE LITTLE LIMO NOW PROUDLY CARRIES A SET OF THE 40TH ANNIVERSARY SPECIAL ISSUE SPAX ADJUSTABLE SHOCKS, AGAIN FROM: *MINI SPORT* IN THE U.K.

AND SINCE WE DID THE FRONT BRAKES, WHY NOT THE REAR..

I THOUGHT IT MIGHT JUST GE A GOD IDEA TO ADD A GOOD QUALITY UNDER HOOD INSULATION MAT, NOT THE KIND THAT FALLS APART AFTER 3 MONTHS, BUT RATHER THE BEST I COULD FIND DIRECT FROM MINI-SPORT, WHERE ELSE OF COURSE.. WHILST UNDER THERE, I ALSO DECIDES TO ADD THE *ALDEN* POINTLESS ELECTRONIC IGNITION, THAT SURE WAS A PIECE OF CAKE TO INSTALL, AND SURE LOOKS LIKE STOCK, AND PERFORMANCE, IT SHOWS RIGHT AWAY AS WELL, THE ENGINE IDLES SO PEFECT THAT I LITERALLY CAN DO THE GLASS OF WATER ON THE INTAKE-MANIFOLD TEST, AND IT IS STEADY AS A ROCK, I AM VERY SATISFIED AGAIN, THANK YOU TO MINI-SPORT... YOU CAME THROUGH AGAIN...AND TO THINK NOT TO HAVE TO MESS WITH CHANGING AND ADJUSTING POINTS ALL THE TIME...THAT WILL BE NICE INDEED...
I ALSO ENDED UP HAVING TO RE-COVER THE DOOR PANELS, DUE TO THE HIGH MOISTURE LEVEL ON THE SHIP ON THE WAY OVER FROM THE U.K., THEY HAD WARPED QUITE A BIT. SO I USED HIGH QUALITY HARD BOARD, ALSO NOTE THE GORGEOUS BURR WALNUT DOOR HANDLES, NOT PLASTIC, BUT THE REAL DEAL...LOOOOKIN' GOOOOOD !!!!

** A TRIBUTE TO LINDSAY **

WELL HERE WE GO AGAIN, ANOTHER PROJECT, AND THIS TIME I DECIDED TO TACKLE HAVING THE VERY REAR QUARTER WINDOWS * ELECTRIC * WHY NOT, EVERYTHING ELSE ON THIS BEAUTIFUL CAR IS !!! AND THEY ALSO PROVIDE SUCH OUTSTANDING FLOW-THROUGH VENTILATION. SO TAG ALONG, AND WATCH. THE FIRST TASK WAS TO FIND A SUITABLE DONOR CAR, AND SINCE MY WIFE DRIVES A MERCURY VILLAGER, WELL, I WAS NOT ABOUT TO TAKE HER CAR APPART, BUT THIS GAVE ME THE IDEA, IT HAS EXACTLY THE CORRECT PIVOTING/ROTATING WINDOW ACTUATORS THAT I WAS LOOKING FOR. SO ON TO THE PHONE BOOK AND FIND THE JUNK-YARDS, AND I FOUND A PERFECT 1999 VILLAGER (SAME AS NISSAN QUEST) (JUST IN CASE YOU DECIDE YOU WISH TO DO THIS CONVERSION FOR YOUR CAR.)AND THE INSTALLATION WAS PRETTY EASY FROM THERE, EXCEPT THE ACTUAL, ARM ACTUATOR, HAS TO BE REVERSED FROM THE LEFT SIDE TO THE RIGHT, ETC.

** NEW PAINT **
WELL I JUST COULD NOT LEAVE THE ROOF AND FENDER ARCHES ALONE, SO THEY ARE NOW RE-PAINTED IN A BLACK CHERRY PEARL-ESSENCE, WITH A JAR OF 24 CARAT GOLD DUST MIXED INTO TONS OF CLEAR, IT REALLY POPS.

** WEBASTO ELECTRIC SUN-ROOF INSTALLATION **
I JUST COULD NOT LEAVE THE ROOF ALONE, AND I FELT THAT A LIMO IS NOT A LIMO WITHOUT A SUN-ROOF, SO I LOCATED A 40th ANNIVERSARY, WEBASTO ELECTRIC OPEN AIR FULL SIZE ROOF, I FOUND OUT THAT THESE ARE NOT SO EASY TO GET AHOLD OF, AND ESPECIALLY TO FIND THE EXACT COLOR COMBINATION THAT I NEEDED, SUCH *LUCK*.. THE CONSTRUCTION AND QUALITY OF THE WEBASTO ROOF IS ABSOLUTLY SECOND TO NONE, I AM BLOWN AWAY BY THE QUALITY OF WORKMANSHIP, THIS MAKING IT A LOT EASIER TO INSTALL. SO HERE ARE SOME OF THE INSTALLATION PICTURES, YES I MEASURED, AND MEASURED, AND CHECKED & DOUBLE CHECKED SOME MORE...IT WAS SCARY...

WELL I JUST KNEW THERE WAS ONE LITTLE ITEM THAT I HAD FORGOTTEN ABOUT, WELL NOT FORGOTTEN, BUT NOT GOTTEN TO, SO HERE WE GO; THE NAVIGATION-SYSTEM, IT IS A PHILIPS CARIN SYSTEM,MODEL # 520, MY FAVORITE, AND I INSTALLED THE ACTUAL SCREEN FLUSH MOUNTED INTO THE FACE OF THE GLOVE BOX DOOR, FOR A VERY SMART LOOK, AND ALSO OUT OF THE WAY. THE HAND-HELD REMOTE WILL PROBABLY BE MOUNTED IN THE CENTER CONSOLE WHEN THAT IS INSTALLED (THAT COMES LATER ALONG WITH THE AIR-CONDITIONING).
ABOVE YOU CAN SEE THAT I DECIDED TO INSTALL A DOVE GRAY TOP DASH-PAD, AND IT SURE FOLLOWS THE THEME, LOOKS *GREAT*.

THE WINTER IS HERE & PROJECT AIR-CONDITIONING HAS STARTED, AND WHAT A PROJECT THIS IS, THE UNIT WAS ORDERED BRAND NEW FROM MINI IN THE U.K. AND IT TOOK 11 MONTHS FOR ME TO GET IT. THE INSTRUCTIONS ARE *NOT* WHAT I WOULD SAY THE BEST, AND SO WHAT WE HAVE TO DO IS SPEND HOURS OF TRIAL AND ERROR, AND PLENTY OF PATIENCE, THERE IS ABSOLUTELY *NO* ROOM FOR RUSH OR LOOSING YOUR TEMPER, AND THE MARGINS ON THE FIT, ARE REALLY *MINI* IN SIZE... SO WE START IN THE REAR WITH THE CONDENSER AND INTERESTINGLY ENOUGH IT MOUNTS UNDERNEATH THE REAR SUB-FRAME, MOST UNDERSTANDINGLY, AS THERE IS NO ROOM UNDER THE BONNET, SO A VERY CLEVER SPOT INDEED, RIGHT NEXT TO THE BATTERY, AND USING AN ELECTRIC COOLING FAN. MY HELPER DID A SUPER JOB INSTALLING IT ALL, AS ALWAYS, AND HE HAS ALREADY STARTED ATTACKING THE INSIDE HEATER RELMOVAL AND INSTALLATION OF THE A/C & HEATER COMBO PACKAGE.
THE PROJECT IS SLOWLY TAKING SHAPE, AS I SAID THE MARGINS ARE SMALL,EVERYTHING IS A VERY VERY TIGHT FIT, BUT WELL ENGINEERED, SO PATIENCE IS THE WORD FOR THE DAY, THAT IS FOR SURE. I HAD TO ORDER A SMALLER ALTERNATOR, AND I AM GOING WITH ONE THAT IS A MINATURE STYLE WITH INTERNAL FAN, AND ONE WIRE CONNECTION AS BEFORE. IT SHOULD BE HERE IN A FEW DAYS. AND AS YOU CAN SEE, THE COOLING LINES FOR THE CONDENSER RUN THE ENTIRE UNDERSIDE OF THE CAR, ALL THE WAY UP TO THE COMPRESSOR & DRYER RESPECTIVLY, *LONG* HOSES INDEED. THE SPACES ARE TIGHT AND LIKE I SAID THE ENGINEERING IS EXACT ON EVERYTHING, THERE IS ABSOLUTLY NO ROOM FOR ERROR AT ALL.
CHECK OUT HOW NICE THE LIGHTER COLORS MAKE, IT CARRIES THROUGH THE DASH TO THE SPAKER-PODS, INTO THE SIDE PANELS AND THE SEATS, I TRIED TO MAKE IT LOOK AS LITE AND COOL AS POSSIBLE.
** SOME BETTER COOLING **
WELL I DECIDED THAT WITH THE ADDITION OF THE AIR-CONDITIONING, THAT I WOULD UP-GRADE TO SOME BETTER COOLING, AND IN THE MAY ISSUE OF MINI-WORLD MAGAZINE, THERE WAS A GREAT ARTICLE ABOUT JUST THAT. THEY WERE RECOMMENDING THE *RADTEC @ WWW.RADTEC.CO.UK* ALL ALUMINUM RADIATOR (LINK AT THE BOTTOM OF THE PAGE) AS THE BEST CHOICE ON THE MARKET, WITH COOING AT 30% BETTER THAN ANYTHING TESTED, NOW THAT SOUNDS *GREAT* FOR MY NEEDS, SO HERE IT IS, WHAT A PIECE OF JEWLERY INDEED.
NOW DOES THAT LOOK *GREAT* OR WHAT, NOW TOMORROW WE SHALL TEST IT OUT, I CAN NOT WAIT TO SEE THE TEMP GAUGE, AND SEE THE DIFFERENCE. THIS SHOULD BE A GOOD CHOICE WITH THE AIR-CONDITIONING INSTALLATION AND THE 1430cc, JUST TO KEEP EVERYTHING NICE AND COOL.
WELL THE TEST IS DONE, THIS *BABY* REALLY KEEPS THE CAR COOL, WOW NEVER MOVED THE TEMP GAUGE OVER THE CENTER IN 85 DEGREE WEATHER. AND THEN I TOCHED THE RADIATOR AND IT WAS BEARELY WARM TO THE TOUCH, I AM SOLD...
**A SMALL VIDEO UPGRADE **
WELL I DECIDED THAT THE REAR-SHELF SCREEN WAS A BIT SMALL, AND SINCE THERE WAS SOME ADDITIONAL SPACE, I UPGRADED FROM THE 4.5" TO A 7.5" SCREEN WITH MUCH HIGHER RESOLUTION. IT ALSO HAS A MUCH NICER AND MORE FINISHED LOOK, AND WILL LOOK MUCH BETTER AT THE CAR SHOWS WHEN PLAYING THE MINI VIDEO'S & DVD'S.
**REAR SUSPENSION UPGRADE **
ONE SITUATION THAT I HAD WANTED TO ATTEND TO FOR A WHILE, HAS BEEN THE REAR SUSPENSION, AND THE RATHER BUMPY RIDE. THE STOCK RUBBER DOUGHNUT SUSPENSION JUST DOES *NOT* CUT IT FOR THIS CAR, SO I DECIDED TO INSTALL THE NEW STYLE ADJUSTABLE HI/LO SUSPENSION TRUMPETS AND THE BILETT PLATES AND COIL SPRINGS, ALL FROM * MINI-MANIA * IN NEVADA CITY.
WELL AFTER INSTALLING THE HI/LO'S I FOUND THAT THE ADDITIONAL WEIGHT OF THE LIMO WAS TO MUCH FOR THE STOCK SHOCKS, SO AFTER CONFERRING WITH THE GUYS IN THE U.K. WE CAME TO THE CONCLUSION THAT A PAIR OF "GAZ" COIL-OVER DUAL ADJUSTABLE SHOCKS WOULD DO THE TRICK, AND THEY SURE DID. THEY NOW ALLOW ME TO HAVE THE ADJUSTEMENT OF THE HI/LO UNITS AS WELL AS THE SPRINGS ON THE SHOCKS AND THE THE 40 DIAL-IN POSITIONS ON THE SHOCKS THEMSELVES, MAKING THIS SET-UP SECOND TO NONE AND JUST PERFECT FOR MY MINI-LIMO.
