** SOME MONKEY AND MINI-TRAIL HISTORY **
IT ALL STARTED IN 1961, WITH THE VERY LIMITED RELEASE OF THE FIRST MONKEY-BIKE, THE Z100, IT HAS BEEN SAID THAT ONLY ABOUT 10 OR 12 OF THESE WERE EVER PRODUCED, THEY WERE ALL HAND MADE. IT HAD A VERY DISTINCTIVE TRIANGULAR TANK, IT USED 5 INCH WHEEL-BARROW STYLE WHEELS, AND THE PUSH-ROD MOTOR FROM THE C100. THEN IN 1963, THE CZ 100 WENT IN TO PRODUCTION, IT LOOKED VERY SIMILAR TO THE Z100, WITH THE SMALL 5 INCH WHEELS, AND THE PUSH-ROD MOTOR, BUT NOW USED THE VERY LARGE GAS TANK FROM THE CA110, IT WAS WHITE, FOR THE FIRST AND THE RAREST OF THE PRODUCTION RUN THE MARK 1 SERIES 1. THE CZ 100 CONTINUED PRODUCTION THROUGH 1966 AND UNDERWENT SEVERAL SMALL CHANGES AND I WILL DISCUSS THOSE LATER ON. THEN IN 1967 THE MOST MEMORABLE OF THE MONKEYS CAME ON THE SCENE, THE 1967 Z50 "M" MONKEY-BIKE,IT HAD THE FOLDABLE LONG TARTAN/PLAID SEAT, AND WAS PRODUCED IN (3) MODELS, THE U.K. MODEL: WHICH HAD THE SMALL HEADLIGHT/LOW & LOW STYLE MUFFLER, THE DOMESTIC JAPANESE MODEL: WHICH ALSO HAD THE SMALL STYLE HEADLIGHT AND HAD A TRIANGULAR HIGH MUFFLER UP BEHIND THE ENGINE UNDER THE SEAT AREA. AND THEN THE RAREST OF THE THREE WAS THE FRENCH MODEL, IT HAD THE VERY LARGE HEADLIGHT, IT HAD A HI/LO FOR THE HEADLIGHT, IT HAD THE LOW STYLE MUFFLER LIKE THE U.K. MODEL.THEN IN 1969 CAME THE Z50 A DOMESTIC JAPANESE MONKEY, A VERY STYLISH MODEL, AND VERY MUCH LOOKS LIKE THE 1969 U.S. VERSION K1 MODEL, WITH A FEW DIFFERENCES, IT HAD TRIANGULAR COVERS OVER THE BATTERY ON EACH SIDE, IT HAD TURN SIGNALS, A HORN, AND ALSO A LOW STYLE MUFFLER LIKE THE MONKEY-BIKE FROM 1967,IT ALSO HAD A SPEEDOMETER. THEN IN 1971 THE Z50Z JAPANESE DOMESTIC WAS PRODUCED IT WAS VERY SIMILAR TO THE U.S. MODEL K2, IT HAD THE FOOT-BRAKE, BUT UNLIKE THE U.S. MODELS IT CONTINUED USING THE BATTERY, IT ALSO HAD A BATTERY COVER ON THE RIGHT SIDE ONLY, AND A REGULAR MUFFLER HEAT GUARD(LIKE THE K2) ON THE LEFT, AND AN UP STYLE MUFFLER, IT HAD TURN SIGNALS, A HORN, BUT A VERY DISTINCTIVE AND A ONE YEAR ONLY ITEM, A QUICK REMOVABLE FRONT FORK (ALSO OFFERED ONE YEAR ONLY ON THE DAX CT70 MODEL)IT WAS SAID THAT THIS WAS MADE THIS WAY SO THAT IT COULD QUICKLY BE REMOVED TO FIT INTO THE CUBBY HOLE OF A CESSNA AIRPLANE,,,INTERESTING INDEED... THERE WERE SOME OTHER RATHER INTERESTING MODELS PRODUCED DURING THIS PERIOD AS WELL, THERE WAS A DOMESTIC-EXPORT AS IT WAS CALLED, IT WAS MAINLY SOLD IN THE PHILIPPINES AS CLOSE AS I HAVE FOUND AND IT HAD THE K1 FRAME, BUT A VERY DISTINCTIVE PLAID SEAT, VERY MUCH LIKE THE TARTAN/PLAID SEAT OF THE 1967 Z50M MONKEY-BIKE, THE PRODUCTION OF THIS EXPORT BIKE WAS EXTREMELY LOW, AND I HAVE YET TO ACTUALLY SEE ONE TOTALLY AND COMPLETELY RESTORED. IF SOMEONE HAS ONE OUT THERE, PLEASE DO SEND ME SOME PICTURES. THERE IS A PICTURE OF IT INSIDE THE COVER OF YOUR 1969 Z50A MANUAL. THERE WAS A GREAT SERIES OF *PETER MAX* INSPIRED SERIES OF BIKES, MAINLY IN THE DAX SERIES SIMILAR TO OUR CT70 BIKES, THEY WERE WILD, WITH FLOWER POWER, MICKEY MOUSE ALL OVER THEM, I MEAN WILD... AND OF COURSE AGAIN VERY VERY LIMITED IN THEIR PRODUCTION.
SO THERE IS SOME BASIC BACKGROUND OF THE MONKEY-BIKES FOR YOU, AND THE BIKES ARE STILL PRODUCED AND CALLED MONKEY-BIKES, EVERYWHERE ELSE EXCEPT FOR IN THE U.S.
** PASSION & MEMORIES **
Everyone collecting and restoring these "GREAT" little bikes, find that THIS PASSION truly does eventually turn into an OBSESSION.. And behind most collectors, there is ALWAYS a GREAT story, of childhood memories, a Christmas gift, or just a story of when we where kids..
And lately, I have had so many calls for information on the MONKEY bikes, Oh, by the way, WHAT IS A MONKEY BIKE and what is a MINI TRAIL??? CURIOUS ??? Well in the U.S. the MINI TRAIL surfaced in 1968 Z50AK0, it had 8 inch wheels, no headlight or tail light, in 1969 the Z50AK1 was introduced (the ONLY U.S. Z50, that had a battery). And in excess of 95,000 were SOLD in the U.S. Market, for that year, making it THE MOST successful bike EVER sold by HONDA, in the U.S. market. Then came the Z50 AK2, in late 1970, (production figures right around 121,000) it dropped the use of the battery, changed the tank badges from ROUND, to OVAL and used longer fenders front and rear. So the K0, K1 & K2 were the only HARD TAIL models (rigid rear frame) made for the U.S. market, and in 1973, the SOFT TAIL (rear shock and swing arm) was introduced. Honda continued the sales of the soft-tail models K3-K9 and finally stopped somewhere in the early 1980's, and every bike that was sold after the K2 ( the last Hard-Tail) was sold for OFF-ROAD ONLY, and with a U.S. GREEN forestry off-road sticker, and could not be driven on the regular streets. So the Interest in the bikes in the U.S. started dwindling, mostly as they were not street legal, there were no turn signals, no battery, no horn, the sex-appeal was gone. Where as in Europe, the MONKEY was still alive and well and continued it's run with the lights, turn-signals, horn and battery, and more and more options, here State side we thought that that Honda had stopped production of OUR favorite little MINI-TRAIL machines....BUT ***NOT AT ALL *** and as they say THE REST IS HISTORY !!
HERE IS ANOTHER GREAT PERIOD PICTURE, TAKEN OUTSIDE A HONDA DEALERSHIP, WITH A TRUCK WITH 2 HONDA'S IN THE BACK.

Here is another GREAT example of a PROUD owner of a Mini-Trail, and check out in the first picture of Michael Jackson & Diana Ross with his 1969 Yellow & Silver K1, it has the head-light & Tail Light, and in the second picture, you can see that Michael sure enjoyed his bike, and the Headlight came off, like so many of the bikes that we see..
I wonder what ever happened with that bike ??
I WISH TO EXTEND MY CONDOLANCES TO THE JACKSON FAMILY FOR THEIR LOSS OF YOUNG MICHAEL ON JUNE 25TH 2009, IT WAS A MAJOR SHOCK TO NOT ONLY MYSELF AND MY FAMILY, BUT TO THE *WORLD* I AS WELL AS MY CHILDREN GREW UP WITH HIS MUSIC, AND WE ALL LOST A *MUSICAL GENIUS* AND A KIND SOLE. OUR SPECIAL HEARTFELT FEELINGS GO OUT TO MICHAELS CHILDREN.
** THE MONKEY IS ALIVE AND WELL **
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cc MONSTER MOTOR, IS CAPABLE OF SPEEDS OF SOMEWHERE AROUND 90MPH, ON 8 INCH RIMS...HE HE HE !!!! MORE SPEED,,,NOT BAD AT ALL.. THERE ARE ALSO 10 INCH RIM CONVERSIONS AVAILABLE, AND PLENTY MORE, JUST ABOUT ANYTHING YOU COULD WANT OR THINK ABOUT, YOU CAN CREATE, AND ALL FOR *FUN*. NOW YOU COULD ASK,,,WHY ??? WELL WHEN YOU TAKE ONE OF YOUR TUNED MONKEY BIKES TO A PLACE LIKE THE FAMOUS *ROCK-STORE* HERE IN MALIBU, CALIFORNIA, A LOCAL HANG-OUT ON WEEKENDS FOR THE HARLEY CROWD AND SUCH MOTORCYCLE CRAZY GUYS LIKE JAY LENO & PETER FONDA & OTHERS, AND YOU PULL UP ON YOUR TUNED MONKEY BIKE, THEY FOR SOME REASON STOP LOOKING AT THE HARLEY'S, AND COME ON OVER AND START DROOLING OVER YOUR BIKE, AT THE WORKMANSHIP, AND THEN THE STORIES START, LIKE "WHEN I WAS ABOUT 12 OR 13 I HAD ONE OF THESE, WELL NOT QUITE LIKE THIS BUT, SORT OF" AND SO THE CONVERSATIONS START...AND WE HAVE NOTHING BUT *FUN*,,, ASK JEFF TUTTOBENE, HE ARRANGES *FUN* RIDES UP THERE FOR THE MONKEY & MINI-TRAIL CROWD HERE IN THE AREA, AND THEY HAVE A BLAST.
*THE NEW CRAZE, THE XR 50*
YES THE RELEASE OF THE XR50 STARTED OFF A BIT SLOW AT FIRST, BUT ALL OF A SUDDEN THEY ARE GETTING *HOT* & FAST, GUYS ARE GOING CRAZY OVER THESE BIKES, THE DEALERS ARE SELLING THEM AS FAST AS THEY ARE COMING IN & THEY ARE NOT DISCOUNTING LIKE THEY USED TO EITHER. THERE IS EVEN A COMPANY MAKING A KIT THAT INCLUDES A HEADLIGHT/TAIL-LIGHT AND A TURN-SIGNAL KIT , AS WELL AS THE KIT TO CONVERT THE STATOR PLATE ASSEMBLY SO THAT IT WILL HANDLE THE CHANGE OVER TO A BATTERY BASED HARNESS, AS WELL AS A NEW WIRE LOOM, THIS BASICALLY MAKING THE BIKE STREET LEGAL, AS LONG AS YOU TAKE DELIVERY ON THE BIKE WITH AN MSO ONLY AND *NOT* THE NORMAL GREEN STICKER, THEN GO AND REGISTER IT, HAVE IT INSPECTED, ONCE YOU HAVE ALL THE GOODIES ATTACHED, AND THEN YOU HAVE A PLATE FOR THE STREET, NOT BAD, WE HAVE A STREET LEGAL MINI-TRAIL FOR THE TWENTIETH CENTURY.
SO STAY IN TOUCH, I WILL BE ADDING SOME STUFF ON THESE AS WELL ALONG WITH PICTURES, AND IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS, SEND THEM MY WAY.
* MONKEY BIKE U.K. *
AND **YES** HONDA STILL MAKES THEIR OWN BIKES TODAY, THEIR VERY OWN MONKEY BIKES, AND IF YOU LOOK ON THE MONKEY BIKE U.K. PAGES YOU WILL SEE PICTURES OF THE NEW MODELS, AND **NO** HONDA DID **NOT** SELL THEIR TOOLING TO CHINA, TO MAKE BIKES FOR THEM.... WHAT A STORY, AND IF YOU BELIEVE THAT LINE, THEN I HAVE A GREAT DEAL ON SOME SWAMP LAND FOR YOU, HE HE HE !!!! SO IF YOU BUY ONE OF THESE *COPIES* IT IS *NOT* A HONDA, AND THAT IS WHY THEY ARE SO SO CHEAP, THE MOTORS ARE *NOT* HONDA QUALITY, THEY DO *NOT* HAVE THE SAME FIT AND FINISH, BUT WHO WOULD EXPECT HONDA QUALITY FOR A BIKE THAT WHOLE-SALES FOR ABOUT $ 250.00, SO JUST KEEP THAT IN MIND IF YOU GO AND BUY ONE... MAKE THE COMPARISON LIKE A MERCEDES AND A YUGO, THAT'S ABOUT WHAT YOUR MONEY IS BUYING, NO MORE, NO LESS, NOT SAYING THIS IS BAD, THEY DO MAKE A GOOD RIDER JUST FOR FUN, BUT PARTS ARE NOT VERY EASY TO GET.
THE BEST THING ABOUT DOING A WEB PAGE & SHARING IDEAS LIKE THIS, ARE ALL THE *GREAT* PEOPLE THAT YOU MEET, THE NEW FRIENDSHIPS THAT I HAVE MADE & SOME FANTASTIC STORIES THAT I HEAR EVERY DAY. REMEMBER THE OLD SAYING:
"YOU MEET THE GREATEST PEOPLE ON A HONDA"
SO PLEASE KEEP WRITING & I WILL KEEP ANSWERING EVERYONE, I PROMISE.

I DO GET PLENTY OF GREAT EMAIL FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD, AND SOME ASKING ME TO DO RESTORATIONS, I AM NOW DISABLED AND MOSTLY JUST PLAY WITH THE WEB PAGES & ALSO PLAY WITH MY OWN BIKES AS I CAN, BUT I STILL DO A RESTORATION HERE AND THERE FOR A SPECIAL CUSTOMER, SO PLEASE EMAIL ME AND I WILL SEE IF I CAN HELP YOU OUT WITH YOUR NEEDS.AND IF I CAN NOT, THEN I WILL PASS YOU ON TO ONE OF MY GOOD FRIENDS OF MINE FOR THE JOB. AND BACK TO ALL THOSE EMAIL'S, YES I GET A FEW HUNDRED PER WEEK, AND I DO ANSWER EVERY ONE, SO ASK AWAY.
** RESTORATION TIPS **
FIRST OF ALL LET ME START BY TELLING YOU THAT JUST LIKE THE EARLY RARE MONKEY BIKES WHERE THERE WERE INTERESTING FRAME CHANGES AND CARRYOVER CHANGES BETWEEN MODELS, WE ALSO HAD THE SAME ON OUR LITTLE MINI-TRAIL'S HERE IN THE U.S., ALTHOUGH VERY MINOR, AND SOMETIME VERY HARD TO SPOT, AND OFTEN OVER-LOOKED THEY WERE STILL THERE. I WILL TRY TO EXPLAIN SOME OF THESE SPECIAL SMALL CHANGES AND RARITIES, IN A LATER PAGE, AS THIS WILL WITH TIME MAKE SOME BIKES MORE VALUABLE THAN OTHERS, AS THE COLLECTING AND THE VALUES GET EVEN MORE SERIOUS.
IN MOST OF THE EMAIL THAT I GET, IT HAS TO DO WITH DOING A PROPER RESTORATION, SO LET ME TOUCH ON THAT FOR A MOMENT, AND GO OVER A FEW POINTERS. OVER THE YEARS HONDA CHANGED THE MARKINGS ON THE BOLT HEADS SLIGHTLY, THERE HAVE BEEN A TOTAL OF (7) TOTAL CHANGES INCLUDING THE MONKEY BIKES, A COMMON MISTAKE THAT RESTORERS DO IS TO ASSEMBLE A BIKE WITH MIXED HARDWARE...THIS IS A NO NO !! SO WHAT TO DO... I WILL BE ADDING A PAGE WITH PICTURES OF ALL THE SPECIFIC HARDWARE AND THE SERIAL NUMBER CODES AT WHICH THEY APPROX. CHANGED, NOW THAT GUYS ARE STARTING TO SHOW THEM AT BIG SHOWS AND WINNING SOME MAJOR PRIZES, IT IS GETTING EVER SO IMPORTANT NOT TO MAKE AN ERROR IN THIS AREA. ANOTHER BIG AREA HAS TO DO WITH THE COLORS, THE 1968 CAME IN ONLY 2 COLOR COMBINATIONS; RED/WHITE & YELLOW/WHITE, THE K1 CAME IN 3 COLOR CHOICES LIKE THE K2, THEY WERE CANDY-BLUE/SILVER, CANDY-RED/SILVER & YELLOW/SILVER A NON CANDY COLOR, ALSO THE LEAST PRODUCED, AND ALSO DEPENDING ON THE SERIAL # THERE WERE ACTUALLY 3 SHADES OF THE YELLOW THROUGH THE RUN OF THE K1. ON THE K2, THE COLORS WERE A POWDER CANDY-BLUE/WHITE, CANDY-RUBY-RED/WHITE AND YELLOW/WHITE, AGAIN THERE WERE VARIATIONS IN THE YELLOW COLOR, SOME WERE IN WHAT WAS REFERRED TO AS THE "MEXICAN" YELLOW, AND THEN THERE WAS A MORE EYE PLEASING AND NOT SO DIRTY LOOKING SUNNY LOOKING YELLOW AND THE WHITE COMBINATION, ALL ARE PICTURED ON MY PAGES.
I HOPE THAT SOME OF THESE SMALL ITEMS WILL BE OF HELP TO YOU. YOU HAVE TO TAKE A LOOK AT AN ABSOLUTELY *GORGEOUS* RESTORATION, OF A 1969 Z50 AK1, AND VERY VERY WELL DOCUMENTED, SO I DO BELIEVE IT WILL BE OF GREAT HELP TO MANY OF YOU THAT ARE GOING TO OR HAVE ALREADY STARTED YOUR OWN RESTORATIONS. SO PLEASE TAKE A LOOK AT; CLARKE SPICER'S *OUTSTANDING* RESTORATION & EQUALLY OUTSTANDING DOCUMENTATION OF IT.
""CLARKE SPICERS RESTORATION"

PLEASE SEND ME YOUR DOCUMENTED RESTORATIONS & PICTURES OR WEB LINKS, I WOULD LOVE TO ADD THEM TO MY PAGE, IT HELPS EVERYONE OUT THERE, AND JUST LIKE CLARKE'S, WE ALL COULD USE A GOOD ROAD-MAP FOR A GOOD RESTORATION, AS THERE IS NO GOOD RESTORATION MANUAL AVAILABLE FOR ANY OF THESE BIKES OUT THERE.
**THANK YOU FOR YOUR INCREDIBLE INTEREST & SUPPORT**
